Addressing Educational Standards and Public Service Delivery in Carmarthenshire
The latest international PISA education results released on September 8 present significant challenges for Wales’ education system. With 15-year-old pupils recording lower scores across mathematics, reading, and science compared to peers in other UK nations, these findings demand urgent, focused parliamentary scrutiny.
For families and educators across Carmarthenshire, ensuring our young people receive a high-standard education that prepares them for skilled employment, further training, or higher education is a central priority. While the Welsh Government points to social equity initiatives and planned literacy and numeracy intervention plans, scrutiny must center on whether core educational outcomes, classroom standards, and foundational skills are being effectively delivered in our schools.
Aligning Resources with Frontline Delivery
Effective governance requires evaluating why higher per-capita spending has not yielded stronger performance in key public service sectors, including education and healthcare:
Classroom Resources: Delegating financial and operational resources directly to headteachers and local school leaders ensures funding directly supports classroom teaching, staff retention, and tailored learning interventions.
Academic Standards: Prioritising diagnostic monitoring and foundational academic competencies helps identify learning gaps early, addressing persistent absenteeism and supporting pupil attainment.
Public Service Efficiency: Directing support to frontline services, such as rural GP practices and community schools, ensures public expenditure delivers measurable improvements for rural working communities.
As a Member of the Senedd for Carmarthenshire, I will continue to press the Education Minister and government officials in Plenary and Committee sessions to establish clear benchmarks, hold administrative bodies accountable, and ensure our local schools receive the targeted support they need.
