As I walked away from this year’s Cambrian Patrol, my overriding feeling wasn’t just admiration for the soldiers, it was a stark reminder of how deeply intertwined our nation’s security, economy, and local communities truly are.
As someone serving on the Senedd’s Culture, Communications, Welsh Language and Sport Committee, I spend a lot of time looking at what makes our communities tick, the strength of our local economy, and the unique identity we hold in Wales. But stepping out into the field to witness this grueling exercise brought a whole new perspective to light.

A Hidden Economic and Cultural Pillar
Not many people realise just how substantial our defense footprint is here in Wales. We are home to over 1,300 regular army personnel, more than 1,400 reservists, and 2,600 cadets, meaning 4.5% of our Welsh population are proud veterans. Beyond the uniform, defense is a powerhouse for our regional economy. We boast a vibrant defense and space sector made up of over 160 organisations, directly sustaining 3,900 jobs through Ministry of Defence expenditure. These aren’t just abstract numbers on a page; they represent local livelihoods, family stability, and thriving supply chains rooted right here in our communities.

The Ultimate Test of Grit
Now in its 67th year, the Cambrian Patrol isn’t just another military exercise, it is globally renowned as one of the most demanding physical and mental tests a soldier can face. Watching 140 international and domestic patrols take part this year brought home the sheer scale of the challenge.
Imagine navigating 60 kilometers of utterly unforgiving terrain in just 48 hours, all while carrying a punishing 32-kilogram pack on your back. These troops are pushed right to the absolute edge of human endurance for the chance to earn gold, silver, or bronze.

What struck me most was the sheer breadth of what they must master under pressure. This goes far beyond standard fieldcraft. These soldiers are assessed on everything from evading unmanned aerial systems and responding to CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) threats to executing complex artillery target drills, reconnaissance, prisoner handling, and explosive management. It is the ultimate real-world examination of the battlefield soldier first syllabus.
Standing with Our Armed Forces
Seeing these troops operate with such unwavering precision reinforces why protecting and supporting this ecosystem matters so deeply. It’s about ensuring our personnel receive world-class training while backing the wider military family that supports them. To everyone who took part, organised, or supported this year’s Cambrian Patrol: you represent the very best of us.
