Championing Local Business and Hospitality: My Visit to Ffoslas Racecourse

On Friday, Sept 25th I had the real pleasure of visiting Ffoslas Racecourse in Trimsaran to meet with General Manager Kevin Hire and the team.

As a Member of the Senedd for Sir Gaerfyrddin, one of my top priorities is standing up for our local economy, our rural heritage, and the businesses that generate real jobs across West Wales.

Ffoslas is a prime example of what vision and investment can achieve for our county. Built on the site of a former opencast coal mine, Ffoslas transformed a redundant industrial site into a premier sporting and events destination. It doesn’t just bring thrilling jump and flat racing to Carmarthenshire, it serves as a major economic engine for Trimsaran, Llanelli, and the wider Gwendraeth Valley.

From hospitality staff and catering suppliers to local ground-keeping and event contractors, the venue supports scores of livelihoods right here in our community.

During my visit, Kevin and I discussed both the huge opportunities and the current operational challenges facing the racing and leisure sectors. We talked through the pressure of rising running costs, business rates, and the vital role that sports tourism plays in driving footfall to our hotels, restaurants, and high streets.

It is clear that venues like Ffoslas need a supportive environment to thrive, host major events, and attract visitors from across the UK. I look forward to working closely with the management team and bringing these insights back to the Senedd as we continue pushing for pragmatic policies that support West Wales businesses.

Thank you to Kevin Hire and all the staff at Ffoslas for the warm welcome and for everything they do to put Carmarthenshire on the map.
