Protecting children and vulnerable young people is a fundamental duty of government and public authorities. Recent confirmation of targeted investigations into child sexual exploitation in Wales underscores the critical importance of robust, transparent public protection systems.
Across Carmarthenshire, our rural geography introduces specific complexities for frontline public services. Rural isolation can increase the vulnerability of young people, making effective multi-agency communication and early intervention vital across our local authorities, health boards, and police forces.
Parliamentary scrutiny must focus on ensuring that public bodies operate with total transparency, facilitate unhindered access for investigative authorities, and deliver comprehensive support for victims and survivors. In the Senedd, I am calling on the Welsh Government and partner agencies to focus on:
Strengthening Multi-Agency Coordination: Ensuring seamless communication between social services, education, and law enforcement in communities across Llanelli, Carmarthen, and the Tywi Valley.
Frontline Resource Prioritisation: Ensuring resources directly support frontline social workers and child protection specialists in rural areas.
Scrutiny and Executive Accountability: Monitoring government delivery and committee recommendations to guarantee that public protection policies translate into effective local action.
