Preserving Our Rural Schools and Supporting Welsh-Speaking Communities

The ongoing proposals regarding rural primary school reorganisations across Sir Gaerfyrddin highlight fundamental challenges in rural community infrastructure and local education planning. For generations, small primary schools have played a pivotal role in village life, acting as essential hubs for language transmission and community cohesion.

Aligning Local Planning with Educational Capacity

Closing rural school sites places significant logistical and financial burdens on working families across the region. A primary concern is the apparent misalignment between local planning policy and educational provision. While several local primary schools face potential closure due to falling roll projections, concurrent housing allocations continue to bring new families into these same catchment areas.

Furthermore, careful scrutiny is needed regarding local authority asset management, particularly when former school buildings are repurposed for private childcare or early-years provision shortly after being deemed unsustainable for state education.

Securing the Future of Frontline Rural Services

A sustainable approach to rural public services requires policy integration across government departments. To safeguard our rural communities, key priorities must include:

Funding Formula Reform: Reviewing school funding calculations so that rural primary schools are not disproportionately disadvantaged by economies of scale.

Safe Transport Infrastructure: Ensuring home-to-school transport routes are fully assessed for safety, travel times, and environmental impact.

Joined-up Planning: Formally integrating local development plans (LDPs) with educational capacity assessments to prevent infrastructure shortfalls.

I will continue to raise these issues in Plenary and through relevant Senedd Committees to champion rural infrastructure and ensure our local communities are heard.
